Hooked on Storage?

Thursday, March 08, 2007

The article, "Hooked on Storage," about storage space in today's New York Times is disturbing. Just thinking about people renting not one, but two or even three storage spaces to hoard their junk makes me ill. An organizing expert I once interviewed likened America's clutter problem to our country's obesity epidemic. I think this article drives that point home. When will we learn to live with less? When did spending $4,000 a year on storage space become an option?

Hi Laura,

I don't know how I found your blog, but I was glad I did! This article is incredible, and it makes me just a little bit scared. The self-storage thing is a very powerful message. I too have pushed the "store it and forget it" kind of thinking, but haven't taken the leap. It would be for business reasons, thought I can quickly see it being used for my personal stuff too.

I was approached about 1 year ago to do some spokesperson work with a large company. They were developing a line of storage "closets" which after I gave it some thought, could be used smartly, for the right kinds of storage (out of season clothes, sports gear, holiday deco-- that sort of thing.)

I'll be back!
