The Contractor (part 2)

Sunday, March 30, 2008

Phil the contractor came by yesterday to look at my space and talk about the renovation project. My friend C.'s boyfriend recommended Phil, so I had a personal connection to him before we met. I immediately had a good feeling about Phil--he is the kind of person who instills confidence in you from moment one and makes you feel like you're in good hands. He was very good at listening, he had smart cost-saving suggestions and he he took a good hour out of his Saturday morning to sit with me.

Phil promised to get me some basic quotes for what he thinks it will cost to do the various things I am thinking about. He thought it would be about $5,000 (at least I think that's what he was telling me) to take the closet out of the living room, patch the floor, clean up the walls and the ceiling afterwards and install the cupboards and shelving. It's a little more than I hoped, but it would also be money very well spent.

I'm also considering moving the wall between the bedroom and the living room back a couple of feet to give me a little more living room space and make the bedroom a touch smaller. This would also position the wall better between the windows (currently the wall is awfully tight on the living room window). It would also bring some natural light into the kitchen and make the kitchen open directly onto the living space instead of the hall.

I'm going to take some additional measurements and email Phil the floor plan right now. In the meantime, I will keep my fingers crossed that I won't be overwhelmed when I get his estimate.
