Dave Rawlings Machine - Nashville, TN 3/22/07

I don't normally write about music here, but it's a personal blog, so what the heck? I love Dave Rawling and Gillian Welch perhaps more than any other contemporary musicians. Their songs and their music speak directly to me on a level that hits me to my core. I listen to their albums over and over again (often, I sing along). In fact, I finally understood what all the fuss about YouTube was about when I realized there were hours and hours of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings I'd never seen or heard.

This video of Gillian and Dave playing 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' from 2007 makes me love them even more. It also made me feel a little sad. Something about the combination of a song from my childhood (I was a child of the 80s and Cyndi Lauper loomed large) and something about Dave and Gill in some tiny, sweaty club made me feel old. But it's a kind of old that's okay, I may look back on my younger self with a touch of yearning, but my life is better today than it was five years ago, three years ago or even a year ago.

Dave Rawlings Machine is playing the Bowery Ballroom on June 2 and 3, and I'll be there for the Thursday show. I can't wait to see them live again. In the meantime, I'm re-watching their performance at the Beacon Theater from last August--it's amazing.
