While up in Maine, my husband and I had the chance to visit Monhegan, an amazing little island 11 miles off the coast. I loved how remote and wild it was. On our next trip, I'd love to make the journey to another one of Maine's islands, North Haven.
I read about North Haven and the Nebo Lodge in the July issue of Food & Wine magazine. The magazine profiled Nebo Lodge's chef Amanda Hallowell, a native of the island. After a stint in New York City, Hallowell returned to North Haven to cook at the inn, despite the fact that she had no formal training as a chef.
Hallowell sources many of her ingredients right from the island including local lamb, oysters and honey. Judging by the glowing profile in Food & Wine and Mark Bittman's praise, her lack of training hasn't held her back one bit. I hope to make it to North Haven someday to experience her cooking myself!
